“Balloon Mania Time” on HGTV

Todd with Dina Manzo and DanielleNo matter what area of show business you’re in, it’s always gratifying to sit back and watch your own work on the tube.

On June 21st, I got a call from the people behind Dina’s Party, an HGTV program that features Real Housewives of New Jersey star Dina Manzo helping various people plan unique bashes in their homes. They were brainstorming an “adult prom” and wanted to know if I could create some balloon art for them. I explained that I’m a performer, not a decorator. But we decided to work together anyway.

Dina, co-host Danielle and I met with Randy of J&R Balloons, the trusted source in the New York area for all things balloon-related. We held a “balloon consultation” (it’s an industry term), showed them options and helped them figure out what they needed. I twisted a few demonstration balloons, including a monkey, a hat, a flower, and a ladybug for Dina, since she founded the children’s charity Project Ladybug. Not to boast, but I believe she was charmed.

“Balloon mania time” ensued.

I did not attend the prom itself as I was booked to teach a workshop at Magic On Manhattan that day, Fantasma Magic’s first New York convention in a decade, and… well… I was on the poster and already committed. TV appearances are about fun and get good exposure, but then so are galas and conventions. In my stead, I sent Jay Jay, an artist I work with, and he did a fantastic job. The balloon crowns went over particularly well – by the end of the night, Dina had to steal hers back.

The show aired on Saturday, September 10, but, if you missed it, I’m sure you’ll have another chance to catch it. It is, after all, cable. For now, you can watch the condensed version here:

PS: The reviews are in, and they’re positive! Thank you for your kind words, Jungle Jim!
