No matter what area of show business you’re in, it’s always gratifying to sit back and watch your own work on the tube.
On June 21st, I got a call from the people behind Dina’s Party, an HGTV program that features Real Housewives of New Jersey star Dina Manzo helping various people plan unique bashes in their homes. They were brainstorming an “adult prom” and wanted to know if I could create some balloon art for them. I explained that I’m a performer, not a decorator. But we decided to work together anyway.
Dina, co-host Danielle and I met with Randy of J&R Balloons, the trusted source in the New York area for all things balloon-related. We held a “balloon consultation” (it’s an industry term), showed them options and helped them figure out what they needed. I twisted a few demonstration balloons, including a monkey, a hat, a flower, and a ladybug for Dina, since she founded the children’s charity Project Ladybug. Not to boast, but I believe she was charmed.
“Balloon mania time” ensued.
I did not attend the prom itself as I was booked to teach a workshop at Magic On Manhattan that day, Fantasma Magic’s first New York convention in a decade, and… well… I was on the poster and already committed. TV appearances are about fun and get good exposure, but then so are galas and conventions. In my stead, I sent Jay Jay, an artist I work with, and he did a fantastic job. The balloon crowns went over particularly well – by the end of the night, Dina had to steal hers back.
The show aired on Saturday, September 10, but, if you missed it, I’m sure you’ll have another chance to catch it. It is, after all, cable. For now, you can watch the condensed version here:
PS: The reviews are in, and they’re positive! Thank you for your kind words, Jungle Jim!
To promote Cross County Mall, we worked with Cirque du Jour to make four fabulous balloon dresses. The models posed for photos and drew an enormous amount of attention to the area. Tawney Bubbles designed the dresses, and Todd and Casey helped twist them. Besides amazing models, Cirque du Jour also brings top-notch variety artists to events nationwide.
The Pittsburgh Jewish Chronicle just published an informative article about Todd. It discusses his background, and how he made the transition from Patent Attorney to Balloon Artist.
The front-page of the October 7, 2009 WSJ has a nice article about the ever-changing field of balloon artistry. Todd, along with several of his friends, is featured in the piece:

Twistin’ Todd is currently performing in Hangzou, China for Golden Week (celebrating China’s 60th anniversary).
He is performing on the “Big Stage” every morning, building exhibition/display pieces throughout the day, and also strolling in “Interactive Land” with the thousands of Chinese visitors to the festival.
Here is a short video of Todd strolling with a giant balloon giraffe (the lovely lady with him is Diane Orrett from Osaka, Japan):
On an early August morning, Tawney Bubbles entertained the Las Vegas populace on KVBC’s “News 3 at Sunrise”. She showed anchor Dan Ball some fun and impressive balloons, and left him with a special mini-Dan balloon to be his guest reporter. Watch Tawney in action below:
